NPS is a government investment scheme. Pension is given after retirement through this scheme. The scheme was introduced in 2004 for all government employees. Since 2009, the scheme has been opened to all categories of people. Any person can avail this scheme by contributing to the pension account in their working life. He can withdraw some part of the deposited amount even before retirement and the remaining amount to get regular income after retirement. Both employers and employees invest in the National Pension Scheme. Under NPS, employees can withdraw 60% of the total deposits at the time of retirement and the remaining 40% goes to the pension scheme.

National Pension Scheme New Update

Till now government employees were physically registered under the National Pension Scheme. This was done through an online module adopted by the Central Record Company Agency or the nodal offices of the government. Now online facility for registration under National Pension Scheme is being introduced by Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Education. Under this, employees can now open their NPS account online. The online process will be known as E NPS. E NPS will be hosted by CRA. Under which the subscriber can register himself and can also contribute under NPS.

Objective of National Pension Scheme

The main objective of the National Pension Scheme is to provide pension amount after retirement to all investors. Through the National Pension Scheme, all citizens will remain self-reliant even after retirement and will not have to face any financial troubles. Under this scheme, investors can invest according to their economic status. So that more and more people will be able to apply under this scheme. There are two types of accounts in the National Pension Scheme called Tier One and Tier Two. By investing in the National Pension Scheme, you will remain financially independent even after retirement.

Benefits and features of National Pension Scheme

  • The directors of this scheme will be provided pension after retirement.
  • If you have invested in the purchase of Annuity, you will be fully exempt from tax.
  • Additional deduction up to ₹ 50000 can be claimed under section 80CCE.
  • A customer of the National Pension Scheme can claim deduction of 10% of gross income tax under section 80CCD (1) of the Income Tax Act in the total limit of Rs. This limit is 1.5 lakhs under section 80 CCE.
  • The minimum investment limit under the National Pension Scheme is ₹ 6000.
  • If you are unable to invest as much as the minimum limit under the National Pension Scheme, then your account will be frozen and you will have to pay a penalty of ₹ 100 to get the account unfreezed.
  • Earlier the contribution in this limit used to be 10 percent which has now been increased by the government from 10 percent to 14 percent.
  • If the investor dies before 60 years, the pension amount will be paid to the nominee.
  • The Finance Minister of India has decided to separate the National Pension Scheme Trust from the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority.
  • The directors of the National Pension Scheme are provided with a permanent retirement account number which is a 12-digit number. Investors can transact with this number.
  • No more than one account can be opened under the National Pension Scheme.

National Pension Scheme Account Types

There are two types of accounts in National Pension Scheme which are as follows: -

Tier 1- Whatever money will be deposited in this account, I cannot withdraw before time. You do not have to be an account holder for Tier Two to open this account. You can withdraw money only when you are out of the scheme.

Tier 2- To open this account, you must be an account holder of Tier One. You can deposit or withdraw money as per your wish in it. It is not mandatory to open this account to everyone.

National Pension Scheme Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be an Indian citizen.
  • Resident nonresident can invest in both citizen schemes.
  • The investor must be between 18 and 60 years of age to invest in the scheme.
  • A citizen can join this scheme only after the KYC process.

  • Address proof

Procedure for opening an account in National Pension Scheme

Offline process
  • First you have to find the POP-point of presence.
  • Now you need to subscribe form from POP
  • You have to fill all the information asked in this Subscriber Form carefully. You can also download the Subscriber Form by clicking on the link given here.
  • Now you have to attach all important documents.
  • After this you have to submit this form in POP- Point of presence. You have to submit this form with KYC papers.
  • After this you will get a reference number from point of presence through which you can track your application.
  • You must submit your first contribution when you apply. For this you will also have to submit an instruction slip which will contain the details of your payment.
Online process
Tier 1
  • First of all, you have to go to the official website of the National Pension System.
  • The home page will open in front of you.
  • On the home page, you have to click on the link for Open Your NPS Account / Contribute Online.
  • After this you have to click on the National Pension System.
  • Now you have to click on the link for registration.
  • Now the registration form will open in front of you.
  • You have to enter all the important information asked in the registration form such as application type, status of applicant, register with, Aadhaar number, mobile number etc. and select Tier One only in account type.
  • Now you have to click on Continue.
  • After this, the complete pending registration form will open in front of you, all the necessary information such as enrollment number, enrollment date, first name, date of birth, email address, etc. will have to be filled.
  • Now you have to click submit.
  • After this, an e-sign form will open in front of you, you will have to fill all the necessary information in it and click on submit.
  • In this way your registration process will be completed.
Tier 1 and tier 2
